How to Use Signmaking Vinyl for Custom Clothing
There’s a lot of creative potential when it comes to signmaking vinyl, whether it’s used for advertisement signs, frosted office windows, or escort vehicle livery. But have you ever wondered if it could be used on casual clothing? Whilst the idea may seem a little out there, it can actually work surprisingly well, especially when you know what tools to use, what fabric types work best, and how to properly apply the film.
If you are feeling creative and want to add some flair to your t-shirts and outfits but aren’t exactly sure how to do it, don’t worry! We’re here to give you a helpful guide to transforming your ordinary clothing into stylish, wearable art with signmaking vinyl.
What is Signmaking Vinyl?
For those who are unfamiliar, signmaking vinyl is a decorative material that’s typically made from PVC. It comes with a sticky adhesive backing that bonds with smooth, flat surfaces. It’s normally used for windows, vehicles, and, of course, signs. These films come in a variety of colours, finishes, and patterns, meaning they’re a great way to add an extra bit of character to a clothing item! You could invest in a sparkly garment film to make your t-shirt stand out at a party, or you could get a multi-coloured garment film to help your outfit look lively at a public event. The choice is yours!
Appropriate Fabric Types for Signmaking Vinyl
Knowing what fabrics work best on signmaking film means you’re one step closer to achieving your custom fashion dreams! This is because some are better than others when it comes to adhesion, and you’ll want clothing that’s not overly stretchy so that the PVC film grips as well as it can. There are 3 kinds of fabric that work particularly well with signmaking vinyl. Canvas is great for bags and aprons. Denim is also another good option, as it’s tough and doesn’t offer a lot of stretch. Cotton and polyester blends might be more flexible than the previous two options, but they’re also very good for vinyl applications, meaning custom tees and hoodies aren’t off the cards!

The Full Process
Step 1: Create Your Design
It all starts with your design vision! Use software like Circuit Design Space or CorelDRAW to come up with creative ideas before applying anything. Consider sticking to bold fonts and simple shapes, especially if you’re using glittery film which already has a lot going on!
Step 2: Cut the Vinyl
Now it’s time to cut! Load the vinyl into your cutter with the carrier sheet facing down and the matte adhesive side facing upwards. Be sure to do a test cut first to ensure that you’re using the right amount of blade pressure.
Step 3: Weed the Excess Vinyl
Use a weeding tool to carefully peel the vinyl around your design, leaving just your artwork on the carrier sheet. One of the best ways to do this is by starting from a corner and pulling slowly.
Step 4: Prepare the Garment
Lay your clothing item flat on your heat press or ironing board. Press on the garment to remove any wrinkles. It’s also worth using a lint roller to clean the top as well, as like with a car, a smoother surface usually means a smoother vinyl application.
Step 5: Apply the Heat!
The magic happens here! Place your vinyl design on the garment with the carrier sheet facing up and then press it with a heat press or iron. The ideal temperature is between 160 and 170 degrees, and the appropriate timeframe is around 10-15 seconds.
Step 6: Peel the Carrier Sheet
After pressing, wait for a few seconds and then slowly peel off the carrier sheet at a 45-degree angle. Don’t panic if you do happen to notice any lifting. Simply repress with more pressure for another 5-10 seconds.
Step 7: The Post-Press
After peeling, cover the design with a Teflon sheet again and do a final 5-10 second press. This should help seal the vinyl into the fabric fibres and enhance its strength.
